The dining options in Kauai are as diverse as the island's geography. You can sip coffee in the morning while you gaze out at flowing waterfalls (at Caf Hanalei at the Princeville Resort) and then have a romantic dinner surrounded by koi-filled tidepools (at Tidepools in the Grand Hyatt). Below are some of our recommendations for dining on Kauai.

Their "regular special" is filled with a little bit of everything - noodles, pork, fish cake, hard boiled egg, vegetables, and more - and the teriyaki BBQ strips are the perfect complement, along with lilikoi pie or shaved ice for dessert.
It's a small casual place with a few counters and first-come-first-serve bar stools, so grab any empty one you can find or make some friends to chat with while you wait.
Finally, make sure you find them and their amazing food drive slowly on Rice St. and Hamura's is about 1/8th of a mile down (you've gone too far if you see the Pink Motel on your left).

The caf has been in Kalaheo for over 11 years and recently moved to a new location near their old one, plus changed the name to include "Cafe &" - in their words, "Mostly cause folks thought we only did coffee."
As you can imagine, there are plenty of cups o' Joe to choose from, but their bakers also get up really early and make yummy fresh daily pastries. Specialty breakfasts include the famous Bagel Benny (grilled ham & poached egg on toasted bagel with hollandaise sauce) or the veggie version (grilled vegetables with tomato-onion relish instead of ham).
And their "Lunch & Beyond" menu includes deli-style sandwiches and amazing panini-type grilled ones (from grilled BBQ beef to Cajun tofu & eggplant options). Daily soups come with home-made focaccia bread and the lighter salads make good use of Kalaheo greens. Signature Liquid Magic smoothies can mix a variety of ice cream flavors with papaya, banana, and pineapple.
They're proud to note that all coffees are estate roasted on Kauai, so make sure to stop in if you're on your way up the mountain to Kokee. (As a bonus, tell your friends when you'll be there and they can watch you eat on Kalaheo Cafe & Coffee Company's webcam!)

For more than fifteen years, Kintaro has remained Kauais best Japanese restaurant, a must if you are looking for delicious food in an attractive, comfortable setting. In fact, you will probably see the owner, Mr. Kim, hard at work running the smooth operation begun by his father. Kintaro's offer a full range of wonderful Japanese delights: teppan yaki dinners, sushi, and dinner specials.
What you choose to eat determines where you sit. Cocktails and pu pus are served in a comfortable, attractive lounge, where you can sip a wonderful chi chi, sample elegant sashimi, or munch on crispy fried won tons from the owners factory next door.
In the same spacious room, you can sit at the teppan yaki tables and watch talented chefs chop and flip and make things sizzle. As they will be happy to show you, the raw ingredients are fresh and of the best quality. Fresh island fish is enormous, and perfectly cooked to be tender, juicy, and tasty.
The restaurant is decorated in tasteful harmony of blues, whites, grays and tans. A fountain set in blue tiles and a sushi bar take up one long white wall. Nut-colored wood tables are set with chopsticks in blue and white wrappers, blue and tan tea bowls, and a striking single flower. Ceiling fans and air conditioning make Kintaro comfortably cool, and subdued Japanese music sets a relaxed mood.

One of our favorite restaurants in all of Hawaii. Randall Yates and his wife Joanna have been treating residents and visitors to their culinary delight for over 19 years in Kauai.
You'll find Italian fine dining at Casa Di Amici in Poipu, where strong Italian flavors blend well with international and local Hawaiian ones. There's a romantic feel perfect for special occasion meals, and space and ambiance for families and large parties as well.
Their fettuccine alfredo is the best of the best, but there are plenty of other delicious entrees, too - tender filet mignon or porcini crusted chicken breast in sundried cherry port wine and mushroom sauce (served with parmesan-basil "polenta points"). And appetizers are delicious, like risotto Kalua pork and cabbage, or shrimp and ahi Thai sticks with a sweet and spicy chili/wasabi/peanut flavor. There are also salads that use local Kilauea organic greens and their huge slice of chocolate torte is worth sharing for dessert.
Reservations are requested, and try for an outside deck table at dusk for a dining experience near tropical plants and a Kauai sunset view. If you can go on a Saturday evening there's also romantic live piano music.

Tidepools Restaurant at the Grand Hyatt Kauai is a rustic combination of open-air thatched huts, waterfalls, and lagoons. With tiki torch flames and ocean views, the warm and romantic feel sets the mood for a very fine dining experience.
Their menu makes wine pairing suggestions and fresh fish comes in various preparation styles (the oven roasted Hapu'upu'u sea bass is a delight with a full-bodied chardonnay). Contemporary Hawaiian fusion cuisine is the specialty, and that includes steak and vegetarian dishes as well - the garlic peppercorn rubbed prime rib or baked teriyaki tofu are both excellent.

A sweet Ruby port and Kahlua chocolate lava cake combo might be the perfect ending, or have a coffee drink (like the Prince Kuhio, mixed with Bailey's, Kahlua, whipped cream, and vandermint) as a dessert onto itself.
