Favorite Restaurants on

Dining options on Hawaii are as diverse as the island's geography. Choices range from a casual lunch in Kona town to upscale dining at one of the beautiful resorts on the Kohala Coast. Here are some of our favorite restaurants on the island.

Habanero's

 Resort Area : Kona

 Food Type : Mexican

Price Range :

Address: 786831 Alii Dr.
Phone Number: (808) 324-4688
Open: Monday - Saturday 9am-9pm

As one of Keauhou Shopping Center's 40+ shops and restaurants, this great Mexican eatery is a small but busy diner with spicy dishes. With deli-style service (you order and pick up from the counter), it's a nice spot for a quick lunch or dinner while you shop.

They have eggs in the morning - as part of a burrito or a full classic huevos rancheros dish - and fish, steak, and chicken on nachos, quesadillas, or tacos throughout the rest of the day. Enchiladas, burritos, and daily specials are also available.

Enjoy a south of the border (the mainland one, that is) atmosphere and an authentic Mexican menu in this open-air shopping center that features free entertainment and cultural demonstrations every Friday.

Coffee Shack

 Resort Area : Kona

 Food Type : Coffee/Dessert

Price Range :

Address: 83-5799 Mamalahoa Hwy.
Phone Number: (808) 328-9555
Open: Daily 8am-3pm

On your way to the Mauna Loa volcano, stop in at the Coffee Shack for an outdoor meal at deck tables and a fantastic Kona Coast ocean view down the mountain.

Sip kona coffee made from beans off the trees surrounding the restaurant, and enjoy sandwiches, pizzas, and homemade pastries, or eggs and fruit breakfast choices. Omelettes chocked full of tasty veggies or ham are presented with a banana leaf, fresh pineapple, and toast and gourmet pizzas come sizzling with a variety of toppings.

There are incredible views from the deck or from any dining room table through large windows. See Hawaii's many geckos up close - cute, but thankfully distracted from your plate by a bowl of jelly set on the railing for them.

Harbor House

 Resort Area : Kona

 Food Type : American

Price Range :

Harbor House located in Kona on Hawaii

Address: 74-425 Kealakehe Pkwy.
Phone Number: (808) 326-4166

Watch fishing and larger boats dock in Honokohau Harbor, then meet their crew and guests at the Harbor House, a popular local eatery just north of Kona. It's a casual place to unwind by the water that has ten beers on tap with legendary ice-cold schooners (18-ounce mugs) that are cheap and refreshing.

Burgers, fish and chips, calamari, and sandwiches (including a great ahi one) are part of the standard pub fare available.

The light and breezy atmosphere is topped off with a 1,600-pound mounted marlin on the wall, and the small-fishing-village ambiance is enjoyable in between your own vacation adventures.

There are also tasty handmade pizzas, sandwiches, and local twists on pub food like the Kb'cilla Po'okela, a spicy kona quesadilla with Kalua pig and homemade salsa. Chocolate fans will adore the Kilauea Lava Flow dessert, complete with brownie, macadamia nuts, island-made vanilla bean ice cream, and fudge sauce (plus whipped cream and a cherry!), but also try a classic root beer float if you're in the mood, made with the regular ingredients or with one of their own beers for just $1 more.

Killer Tacos is a little shop in an old industrial area of Kona, and unless you knew where to go, you'd probably only find it if you were lost. Lucky for you, others have been there before and lived to tell the food is truly killer, and at shocking prices (the most expensive item around was a $6 salad), but you'll die with a smile on your face. There are great amounts of tacos and burritos and you'll have some choices to make - try a fish taco, fresh and succulent, or a ground beef burrito with spicy salsa.

Dishes like the sweet and sour or Kang Panang (roasted curry with coconut milk) come with your choice of chicken, beef, pork, or seafood, and traditional jasmine or brown rice. Classic Pad Thai and Tom Yum soup (hot and sour with lemongrass and Thai spices) are both fantastic.

They serve seafood and pasta entrees in addition to steak, but their selections of Black Angus beef are phenomenal. The butter poached & grilled Keahole lobster is also outstanding, maybe topped off with one of their specialty souffle or the unbelievably delicious macadamia-nut pie.

Reservations are required and The Grill's award-winning meals and extensive wine lists are worth the phone call.
