Favorite Restaurants on Oahu

One of the great things about Oahu is its diversity and this holds true to the variety of restaurants on the island. So whether you're looking for a casual lunch on the water (try Duke's at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach) or an upscale romantic dinner (La Mer at the Halekulani is a great option) you'll have plenty to choose from on Oahu.

Cheeseburger in Paradise honors Jimmy Buffet in both name and practice, since it's named after one of his songs and you'll often hear his music in the background as part of the ambiance.

It's a popular, casual pub-style restaurant directly across from Waikiki Beach with great views of the water where there's lots of bamboo, burgers, and margarita flavors. Plus huge salads, Mai Tais, and the best fries (regular or chili cheese).

They have stock rock music on during the day and live entertainment after 4pm in a lively but generally laid-back atmosphere.

Part of the chain of great Hawaiian restaurants, Duke's Waikiki was also named in honor of surf legend Duke Kahanamoku. With an oceanfront location at the Outrigger Hotel on the sands of Waikiki Beach, it overlooks the famous spot where Kahanamoku rode the biggest wave of his life. It's a Duke museum in itself, decorated with memorabilia like surfboards, posters, photos, and even a canoe. It's a trendy spot, almost always full of activity and music of the islands.

They're open all day and offer a full breakfast buffet until 10:30 or the "express" (without the hot stuff) until 11. For lunch you can have burgers, tacos, salads, pizza and even fresh fish "Duke's style" (baked in garlic, lemon and sweet basil glaze). Dinner offers delicious steak and seafood and the Barefoot Bar is always a fun spot for an appetizer or drink. Refreshing tropical cocktails are wonderful - try a Dig Me Daiquiri or the virgin version without the rum.

Along with live entertainment after 4pm and in the spirit of its namesake, Duke's is the place for an old Waikiki aloha experience.

Their signature "Only" is probably the most recommended steak dish on the island, a tender New York Strip broiled over native Hawaiian Kiawe wood with a secret sauce that will make you want to send compliments to the Chef. There are also lamb, fish, and even vegetarian options. Enjoy specialty flamb desserts prepared tableside, from Bananas Foster to the Chocolate Lovers'.

Hy's has a full bar and an overall intimate ambiance that is consistent across varied rooms - dine in what feels like a traditional gentlemen's club, European mansion, tropical art deco space, or in their Library Lounge, where a mellow island musician also performs live on Wednesday through Saturday evenings.

Make sure to pull out your fancy vacation clothes and dress for the occasion, since Hy's does require "proper attire," and make reservations if you can.
