Amigo's is a bona fide, charming Mexican food restaurant where the owner usually greets you at the door. It's busy with tons of regular customers and tourists and the food is delicious.

Sam Sato's is the kind of place everyone should go to before leaving Maui, to enjoy the food there then bring home white boxes full of their famous maju (flaky pastry baked with sweet lima or adzuki beans inside).

Tokyo Tei is an authentic Japanese restaurant with good food and ambiance that's usually crowded with local residents rather than with tourists. The owner's sumo wrestler grandfather opened the original Tokyo Tei in the 30's and you can find samurai swords and traditional woodblock prints decorating the space now. It's a hole in the wall with simple, fresh food, friendly servers, and reasonable prices.

There is no chic sushi bar, but their sashimi is excellent. Their highlights are tempura, teriyaki, sukiyaki, and katsu meals made with beef, chicken, and fresh fish. Enjoy a great Japanese meal in a comfortable setting without any lavish presentation or pricing.

A Saigon Caf� has never put up a sign and is located off main streets under a bridge, but it's still one of the most popular places to eat in Central Maui, especially for the lunchtime business crowd. Lucky tourists who are tipped off by friendly locals also get to experience the charm and delicious food at this Vietnamese eatery.

Inside and outside lanai seating is available to dine on the extensive menu - try fresh summer rolls, garden party shrimp, tofu with curry and lemon grass, or pupu-style T-bone steak. There are plenty of soups, spicy noodle dishes, and even Vietnamese "burritos" wrapped in rice paper, some cooked at your table.

The Five Palms is a casual open-air dining area at the Mana Kai resort and its tables are feet from the beach with panoramic views of the Wailea coastline, Kahoolawe, and Molokini. The Pineapple Grill restaurant sits on the Kapalua Bay Golf Course overlooking the sea, with views of the water of West Maui's sea channel visible in the distance through large windows.
