Biking through Waimea Canyon |
If you enjoy adventure during your vacation, then Kauai’s your island. With the majestic Napali Coast, rugged interior and more waterfalls than you can count, Kauai will truly channel your inner Indiana Jones. |

Perhaps one of the most unique adventures on the island is a bike ride along Waimea Canyon. Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” (given that nickname by none other than Mark Twain) Waimea Canyon stretches 10 miles long, a mile across and over 3,000 feet deep. |

The guided tours include the bicycles, safety equipment and a van escort in case someone isn’t able to finish the ride. Tours offered at Sunset are especially exciting. You’re given a guided, tour up Waimea Canyon in a van to the gathering point some 3,800 feet above sea level. Here you can grab some photos of the canyon and valley below since, for obvious safety reasons, picture taking is not allowed while on the bikes.

The trip downhill is about 13 miles, but it’s not as strenuous as it sounds. A few pedals with your feet to get you started are all you’ll need as gravity quickly takes over and sends you soaring down hill. You’ll feel cool breezes whip across your face as you cruise along at speeds up to 25 mph. If your group moves quickly enough you’ll usually be able to catch the sunset over Ni’ihau out on the horizon. |

The tour comes to an end with a final ride through the quaint town of Kekaha and then along the ocean; a gentle ride to help cool down your legs. It’s a perfect way to end your adventure. Like the majestic Waimea Canyon, your beachfront view at the end is one of a kind.
