Our Great Hawaii Vacations Review

Oceanfront studio apartments at an excellent rate. The pool area is also very nice. One of the best restaurants in Kona is located adjacent to the Kona Magic Sands.

Property Description

The Kona Magic Sands is a budget oceanfront condominium complex with studio condos located next to Disappearing Sands Beach.

The condos at the Kona Magic Sands have an awesome oceanfront view of the water. Some of the studios have enclosed their lanais and therefore the interiors are larger. Many of the condos have not enclosed their patios and these have an outside sitting area.

The Kona Magic Sands has a very nice swimming pool area. The property also has one of the Big Island's best restaurants. The property is also located next door to White Sands Beach, also known as Disappearing Sands Beach because sometimes the beach goes away. When the beach is there it is an added plus to this property. The only white sand beach in Kona.

Kona town is just a short drive from the Kona Magic Sands. Kona town offers a large choice of restaurants, stores and art galleries. Most of the Big Island activities depart from Kona town.

Location

The Kona Magic Sands is approximately 20 minutes from Kona International Airport.

Beach Information

Conveniently located next to Disappearing Sands Beach (sometimes it's there and sometimes it isn't). Another beach, Kahaluu Beach is a small black sand beach with excellent swimming and snorkeling. It is located a few miles from the Kona Magic Sands.

We would stay here again

We stayed at Kona Magic Sands for our Honeymoon because we are very frugal :-) We stayed in one of the places with a lanai. The lanai was huge and a great place to hang out and have breakfast or toast to the sunset. Our room was fine. It was modest with a pull-down bed from the wall. The bathroom could have used some updates, however, we are the kind of people who like to spend our days exploring and this place was excellent for us. As I mentioned, we bought breakfast food to prepare in the full kitchen and then threw together sandwiches for lunch and were on our way. Then before heading out to a nice dinner somewhere we'd enjoy cocktails while watching the sun go down. After dinner if we came back early there was time for playing games on the lanai, reading or writing in our journals. The beach is right next door and we snorkeled with turtles there. By the end of the week we met a few neighbors as well who were very nice. All in all, we had a great stay and would stay here again. We are from the midwest and staying here was similar to staying at a friends cabin in northern Minnesota meaning you have everything you need, things could be kept up a little bit better, but the activities and view (you can't get any closer to the ocean if you want to be lulled to sleep by it) can't be beat and make it worthwhile returning.

Perfect Place

We were looking for a hotel (inexpensive one) in Waikiki but not in the "busy" section of town. It was a good place for us. The hotel is located in a quieter section of Waikiki near the Honolulu Zoo. The rooms were OK, but we weren't in there enough to be too fussy about it. For what we were looking for, it was satisfactory.

unexpected good time

After deciding to spend our 25th anniversary in Hawaii, and choosing the Queen Kapiolani as our hotel, I began to red reviews on Tripadvisor. Some of the reviews weren't too complimentary at all. Having already "sealed the deal" with the travel agency, we decided to go with our decision. I can truly say to those of you who read reviews amd make up your mind beforehand that you are going to have a bad experience: YOU WILL BE WRONG! We loved our room, and view of the ocean. The desk personell, as well as the maids we saw, were always ready to help us and very friendly. To say the location is great, as you have read before, is an understatement. We walked to most of the places we wanted to explore. The bus is only $2.00, and tyou can get anywhere in town is you check your schedule. (tip)- A information booth for tourists is located at the corner of the Zoo, and the man gave us everything we needed to catch the bus anywhere. We even went to Wal Mart! The local trolley system is great also. You can take the Blue line out to the North Shore and catch beautiful scenery along the way. Our trolley driver was like a paid tour guide! The best tome we had on a day trip was with her. You've already read about the ABC stores being on every block, but the one down from the hotel toward the beach was less expensive than the ones in the middle of Waikki Beach where some of the better, newer hotels are. I got Kona coffee every night, for 69c, and heated it up the next am in the coffee pot in the room. (They charge $2 for the room coffee). Our room was very clean, even though the carpet may have a few stains (so does ours). Noise was zero, and as mentioned earlier, the view was gret, even of the mountains in the am. We had breakfast almost every am in the dining room. Pancakes, bacon, and eggs for under $6.00. We plan to retuen and stay on another island in a few years, and travel to Honolulu for a few days and the Queen Kap will definetely be our destination on the b each. PS- the Hawaiian people are very friendlly, and several of them told us where to eat locally, and a few tips on what to see off the beaten path. I wish all countries were as family-orientented and loving as they are! Make a reservation- you will be glad you did.

What a great time!

I just wanted to take the time to thank you for suggesting the Kona Makai. We wanted to visit the Big Island for a relaxing vacation. This place filled the bill! The complex itself is located on the ocean front, set back from the very busy Alii Drive. The grounds and the gardens are beautifully and carefully landscaped. The pool and jacuzzi are great and a nice gathering place to watch the evening sunsets with the other guests. There is no sand beach, but you are able to snorkel or scuba right in front of the complex. The parasail companies launch right by the complex and are fun to watch. Maybe next time, we try it! The Kona Maki is not overcrowded and the office staff is very friendly and helpful. By the end of the week, we felt surrounded by friends and it was hard to leave, but we know we will be welcomed back. Thank you again for helping us arrange a vacation we'll never forget.

Best Kept Secret in Poipu!

We recently visited 3 islands on a 2 week vacation and spent 5 nights at the Sunset Kahili. We were amazed at the quality of our condo for the price we paid! We had the most fantastic views from almost every room and a nice big lanai to watch the sunsets from every evening. I can't say enough about this property. The staff was very friendly, the decor was very nice, but most of all, the views were unbelievable. It was a very short walk to the beaches which was just fine with us! We look forward to staying here again.

Second Home

We had an Ocean View Room. View was great but the room was very small for 4 people. Had ant problems. I considered their rate for parking outrageous ($13.00 per day) Although this was the 3rd time I've stayed there I doubt that I will go back. Great location but all other things considered it's not worth it.
Linda Geyer, Rockville, MD

Economically Friendly

We stayed at the Park Shore and found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating. Though the rooms were not the top end, and our view was limited they certainly met our expectations with regards to service, cleanliness, and affordability. If we needed something, all we had to do was ask and it was provided. We wanted a place to primarily rest, clean up, prepare for our next outing and we wanted a great location, with easy access to all the area's attractions. The Park Shore definitely met those expectations. If planning on spending an extensive amount of time in the rooms themselves and lavish service, I would recommend something more posh, at a substantially higher cost. But for my money and because we were there to experience the entire area, not just the hotel, I was very satisfied with the Park Shore and would highly recommend it for those on a budget. 3+ Stars!!

Wonderful Hotel, Reasonable Price!

The view was spectacular! To the north we could look out at Diamond Head and to the south we could see the surfers off Waikiki beach trying to catch waves. We had booked a partial ocean view, but for me, I could see enough of it to make it an ocean view. My wife and I took to sitting on the lanai at night and gazing at the lights climbing the mountains in glittering spikes. The air-conditioner cooled the room just fine and even kept the bedroom cool during the day when the door was open. But, at night, when our door was closed the a/c could not do the job. We asked for a table fan and left our lanai door open, the breezes coming off the mountains kept us plenty cool and, even a little chilly a few evenings. As with most hotels, location is a major selling point. While the Aston Pacific Monarch is not on the beach it is only a few short blocks away.All-in-all, we had a wonderful stay at the Pacific Monarch with nothing bad to say about it. The room was comforatble, the kitchen was fully stocked with utensils, dishes, full sized-appliances and even a microwaves. We saved a bundle by eating breakfasts and a lunch or two right in the room. The parking, while the spaces were a challenge to manuver a mini van into, was acceptable. And the location was ideal. What more can you ask for for $100 a night . Not bad for a family of 5. We highly recommend this establishment.
Brett, Davenport, IA

Our favourite and only place to stay.

My wife and I have stayed at the Pacific Monarch 5 times and our son and family have also been several times, the location is wonderful for the beach and close to all the shopping, of course you have the Hot tub and Swimming pool on the roof with a fantastic view of Waikki . As for the staff they were all great, we know them all personnally since we started going there and they seem happy with their job, which carries over as to how they treat their guests and we can guarantee there are no bad surprises.

Perfect Vacation!

Just got back from our vacation to Hawaii and am almost too relaxed to write an e-mail, but I just wanted to take a moment to send a large "Mahalo" your way for making our trip completely hassle-free. Everything went smoothly, from our first phone call to you to our last day on the island. We stayed at the Casa de Emdeko in Kona. Our condo was tastefully and fully furnished, including the kitchen and bathroom. This complex is located right on the ocean, but also has 2 swimming pools, one was salt-water! And the pools were never overly crowded. The pools are a great place to meet your fellow travelers. We tried local restaurants for the first couple of nights, but found a couple of nearby grocery stores (2 miles) and made picnic lunches for travel and barbecued in the evenings. Our condo had central air-conditioning, which we didn't think we'd use in December, but we did for a few days and were thankful for it! We never had it on at night and we could hear the waves washing up against the rocks at shoreside. Casa de Emdeko is an overly-large complex and we were able to meet quite a few other guests. Our last evening, we got together and made our mini-luau, complete with mai-tais. Some of us even plan to meet here again in the future and we will be calling you, Great Hawaii Vacations, your name says it all.

Wonderful Time!

We just got back from our vacation and wanted let you know about our stay. We were on a budget and and stayed at the Maile Sky Court in Waikiki. We didn't know what to expect for the price, but we had an overall good experience. The room was clean, but more importantly to me, the bathroom was clean! The room came equipped with a refrigerator which was nice to keep drinks handy. The location was excellent We were only a couple of blocks away from the beach. We suggest that if you want a comfortable place to stay for a reasonable price the this hotel is for you. Its location is great and bus stops are almost at your doorstep and you are surrounded by many good eating places within walking distance. Many thanks for answering our many questons and helping us stay within our budget. We look forward to making this trip again.

Loved Hawaii!!

The hotel was nice and clean, did not have any probelems. I do wish the hotel was a little closer to the beach, it's about a 10 minute walk through a nice park to get to the beach. the rooms were cozy for two people, nice and clean. would stay there again.the Restaurant wasn't that great, over priced and the food wasn't that good.

Good & Bad

The lobby is open and beautiful with flowers everywhere. We booked a room for 5 people and the hotel charges an extra $20 for the rollaway. The bathroom was very small. The only air conditioner was in the bedroom which made the living room very hot. "They were having unusually hot weather during our stay". The manager of the hotel was wonderful and ended up moving us to another floor and giving us 2 rooms for the same price. Yes, I would stay there again.
Diane, Murfreesboro, TN

Would not stay here again

I thought construction would be completed by the time we arrived, but there was plywood and yellow tape all around the pool, although no construction took place the week we were there. The road noise was awful so we ran the air conditioner to try to cover it up to sleep at night. There was an awful lot of police activity at the hotel and in the neighborhood. Management was not very friendly and although we had asked for a late check out months ahead of time as our plane did not leave until 11:40 p.m. we were only allowed to stay until 1:00 p.m. The maid didn't arrive until around 4:00 p.m. daily, and they did not replace soap bars or shampoo each day although we had run out. We found much nicer hotels for the same price range closer to the beach. We will not stay here again nor recommend it.

Fancy Name for a Budget Motel

My husband and I went to Honolulu recently and booked this hotel's one bedroom "suite". The higher you are in the Imperial the better it gets. However, not even on the 17th floor were the rooms that great. Many things were dirty in the room (sheets, kitchen stuff, etc.) and the air conditioning didnt work. The bed is what put me over the edge. It must have been made of concrete. Most of the staff were very pleasant, but I'm from NY so everyone seemed nice to me in Hawaii. We did get moved to a better room right away, which was nice. I have to say, I was warned this was a "budget hotel" by my agent and he was very honest about everything, but I was looking to save money. My mistake. I will definitly pay a bit more for a more reputable hotel or condo next time. After all, this is my hard earned vacation time. I have learned a valuable lesson.

We will be back

My wife and I stayed, with our two kids for two weeks. My wife and I stayed in a studio room, while the kids stayed with the grandparents, who have a time share. in a one bedroom with a murphy bed and a sofabed. Our room also had the murphy bed and a sofabed. We slept on the murphy, which was very comfortable. The room was clean and well organized and had all the kitchenware we needed, and if you needed something like a blender or extra dresser or even a full size fridge they sent it up. We found the staff very friendly and helpful, especially Jules who works at the little tour desk in the lobby. The inlaws room was on the 24th floor and had a nice view of the ocean at sunset, which to me is nice but I don't want to look at it for two weeks. Our room was on the 3rd floor facing Lewers Street. It hade a larger lanai than the inlaws had, which was more to my liking, because I like to people watch. We would sit out there everymorning, while my wife drank her coffee, I would read the paper. The hotel is close enough to the beach and shopping that you can walk almost everywhere. I would definitley recommend it to family friends in the future. We will be back, hopefully in early 2010.

great location

If you want a place to sleep that is close to the beach and right on the new beach walk you can't go wrong. The Imperial does have dated decor, but my husband and I were there for a week in Nov 07 and it served its purpose. The pool area is extremely small, but who cares? The beach is steps away!! The staff were very nice, however be warned that with the construction of Trump Towers there is a lot of noise..especially if you are on a lower level. All in all it was an average place to stay, but for the location...it is great!

Enjoyable Vacation

Thought that this hotel was in a great location. Close to beach, shops, restaurants and even for a quick meal - Denny's on the ground floor. Trump likes the area - he's building a condo-hotel right nearby. The Sheraton and Royal Hawaiian are within quick walking distance. Tour package desk located in the lobby with helpful personnel. Remodeling plans are in the works; don't know how long that will take though. Right now, one penthouse suite dedicated to timeshare owner's use. Very convenient and spacious for spending time when you have to check out of your room but are not leaving the hotel area until later. We used it for several hours. Pool and hot tub on top (open) deck. Exercise room and laundry facilities available. All in all, thought it was a good value.

We are timeshare owners at the Imperial. Yes, it is a Botique condominium but the location of the property is incredible. The beach is across the street, the restaurants and shopping are more than adequate, and most of all, it is in a desirable part of Waikiki. We feel safe at the Imperial and the staff is wonderful. Overall, the people staying at the Imperial are return guests over the years. As owners we are very happy and proud to be part of the Imperial of Waikiki "family".

Not a HAPPY Place to stay

The room was Ok, for 2 people, if you had 4 or 6 as stated in the ad, you would have been sitting in each others laps and very limited on sopace, bathroom very out dated. A/C in the bedroom was controlled by the A/C in the bedroom from the unit next door, we had no control over the A/C control in our bedroom, and this was a MAJOR PROBLEM that was never corrected. The little refrig had to be pulled out from under the cabinets so air movement could circulate behind it, or it would over heat and the inside would not cool down. the halls had a bad smell to them. and the desk clerk seemed as she did not like her job. WE WILL NEVER STAY THERE AGAIN.

Just the right stuff

My mother-in-law has the time share here and NEVER uses it! They would rather go to Laughlin..... My husband and I have stayed with the folks at the Imperial 3 times over the years (1993, 1998 and 2008) and have enjoyed every visit. The staff is very friendly and most helpful. Sure this isn't a 4 or 5 star hotel, but who wants to stay in a hotel all day when there is "Hawaii" outside to enjoy. After all, isn't a vacation an adventure waiting to happen? Go play! We are planning our fourth trip… Jan. 2010!
