Some friends of ours recommended Great Hawaii Vacations and the RoyalKona Hotel. We weren't disappointed with either.
The hotel is built right on the edge of Kailua Bay and the views of the ocean and sunsets were spectacular!
The room was quite large and comfortable and decorated with a tasteful Hawaiian decor. We had sliding louvered doors which led out to the balcony. The balconies are quite private, so we able to leave the doors open and hear the waves below us. We watched a lot of sunsets from there.
It was also very close to town, and you could walk to all the bars and restaurants in town without getting in to your car. The town is very charming and has a lot of history behind it. It's great for strolling in the evening.
The only negative, is that the pool area is very small, but the resort is an easy drive to many wonderful beach sites.
The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was clean. The view was terrific. And the location was perfect. All in all, one of the best vacations we ever had. Thank you for making it happen.

What an absolutely wonderful place
My family and I just returned from our first visit to Kona, Hawaii. We stayed at the Royal Kona Resort and the one phrase that would sum up our visit is "the photographs don't do it justice".
The staff was friendly, pleasant, and cooperative. The room was great and the price couldn't be beat.
We usually ate breakfast at Don's The Beachcomber Restaurant right on site, and it was tremendous. When we did venture to have breakfast elsewhere, Don's couldn't be beat. Poolside adventures were terrific as well as Don's, located right next to the pool. Best Mai Tais in the world-No exaggeration.
Kailua is located well within distance of any site you want to see and The Royal Kona Resort is perfectly located in Kailua.
We were fortunate enough to see wild sea turtles in the private snorkeling lagoon (on the property), and my wife and I even felt confident and safe enough to leave our daughters in the room (14 and 10 yrs old) to go out alone for a romantic dinner.
The luau there (even though we didn't attend that one-we could see it from the pool) was obviously beautiful and fun.
The ocean crashed consistently against the volcanic rock just below the protective sea wall, and the sunset from the wall was magnificent.
I wish that all of the people associated with the Royal Kona Resort could know just how pleased we were with our whole Hawaii experience (thanks much to them).

Usually Very Good
We have been traveling to Hawaii for several years. When we are visiting the Big Island we have always stayed at the Royal Kona Resort and have reccomended it to our friends.
The location is perfect, within walking distance, to downtown Kailua-Kona
for my wife.
The last ime that we stayed here, 2 years ago, they were renovating the
buildings and we were booked into a room that NEEDED renovation and was
not acceptable. I complained at the desk, and the manager, personally,
showed us other rooms, with an upgrade on a room with no extra charge.
Clean rooms, good views, especially the corner, ocean front rooms
where you have two large balconies, but you have to pay the price.
They are continuing the renovations, so rooms in the main building may not be available.
I have reservations for August 11, 2007, and will check this out again and post my response.

great hotel
This was surprisingly a great hotel. We had read some of the reviews stating it was under construction and noisy. We arrived to the hotel late as our flight had been delayed 4 hours and the night receptionist was very pleasant in attending to us. We thought the room was far better than we expected with a wonderful view of the ocean and amazing sunsets. The bar overlooking the ocean is a big asset with two of the best bartenders in town.(Garret and Kana). This hotel is in a great location for walking to the shops and restaurants if you don't want to hire a car. We had visited friends at the Hilton and the Sheraton and as nice as these hotels were we much preferred the Royal Kona for convenience and price. We will definately be back.

We stay at this hotel for 3-4 weeks every year and find the people, location and service are great. If you want perfection, this is not the hotel for you. If you want friendly, comfortable, safe and a good price, this is the best spot where you can walk everywhere. The people that work in the hotel are like family and it's always like going home to relax after working all year. We come home refreshed and happy.

A very pleasant stay
We had a very pleasant stay. The room was spacious, the bed very comfortable and the bathroom compact, but adequate. The aircon was noisy, but the ocean breeze allowed us to leave it off and leave the doors to the large corner balcony open overnight, which was fine.
The restaurant was good, as were the many restaurants nearby, all very convenient. An excellent location.
We have many beautiful sunset pictures as souvenirs of our stay at Kona and this very nice hotel.

First Time in Paradise
The Royal Kona Resort was much more than I expected. I came with a group of six people including my 85 year old mother. We all had a great time for the week that we stayed, the staff was super. It was very easy to get around even for the older people. Everything is right there in short walking distance. My mother in law was disappointed because she wanted to go also. We plan on coming back in November with my 93 year old mother-in-law and my 88 year old aunt (she wants to go snorkeling). Royal Kona Resort will be easy and safe for them to get around by themselves. If you are looking for an absolute wonderful place to stay, I highly recommend the Royal Kona Resort. What a great introduction to paradise.
